Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by compounding. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: ding int.; ding-a-ding at ding int.
Etymology: Either (i) reduplicated < ding int., with insertion of -a- , connective, and variation of initial consonants, or (ii) an alteration (with consonant variation) of ding-a-ding at ding int. Compare earlier ting-a-ring int. and ring-a-ding int., and also ting-a-ling int. With use as noun compare earlier ting-a-ling n.In sense B. 2 probably with reference either to a sound of ringing in a person's head as an indication of psychological disturbance, or to the sound of bells out of control; compare earlier ding n.7 and also dingbat n. 3a. With sense B. 3 compare earlier ding-dong n. 4 (see the discussion at that entry); compare also earlier ding n.6 and dinger n.5
