单词 dinghy
释义

dinghyn.

Brit. /ˈdɪŋ(ɡ)i/, U.S. /ˈdɪŋi/
Forms: 1700s–1800s dingee, 1700s–1800s dingey, 1800s dinghee, 1700s–1800s dingy, 1800s– dinghy.
Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymons: Hindi ḍīṅgī, ḍoṅgī.
Etymology: < Hindi ḍīṅgī, ḍiṅgī, ḍeṅgī, variant of ḍoṅgī kind of small boat used on inland and coastal waterways < ḍõgā vessel, kind of boat (of uncertain origin) + , derivative suffix. Compare Marathi ḍaṅgī, kind of boat.Compare French †dingue , denoting a small boat used as a tender (1706 in Southern India, in an apparently isolated attestation). Early uses in English often denote larger vessels used in the coastal trade; for these, †dinga is also occasionally attested as an alternative name (1794 or earlier; compare earlier †dunga (1634)). Variant forms. English forms with gh have developed to represent the pronunciation with /ŋɡ/ (and hence /ŋ/) unambiguously, as opposed to // (in e.g. dingy adj.1). Possible earlier evidence. Compare the following, which could show an error for this word (denoting a small boat):1610 Let. 18 Mar. in F. C. Danvers Lett. East India Co. (1896) 61 I have brought with me, over and above our people, George Geffe, the pinnace and her ginge..for better performance.
1. A sailing boat used on the coast of western India. Later also: a smaller boat (sometimes a rowing boat rather than a sailing boat) used on the rivers and lakes of India. Obsolete. It is unclear from the evidence whether any specific feature distinguishes a dinghy in this sense.
