Etymology: < -stan (in the names of various (especially Central Asian) countries, as e.g. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, etc.: see stan n.1). Compare -istan comb. form and earlier stan n.1In Whitestan in quot. 1960 immediately after Bantustan n.
Frequently humorous.
Used as the second element in fictitious place names with the sense ‘the notional realm or domain dominated by or centred around ——’, ‘a world typified or characterized by ——’.Sometimes implying resemblance to (aspects of) Asian or Islamic culture.
