Etymology: < (i) Middle French diabolique, dyabolique of, belonging to, or involving the Devil, of the nature of a devil (end of the 13th cent. in Old French as deabolique ), fiendish, evil, wicked (late 14th cent.), designating witchcraft or sorcery involving the invocation of the Devil (a1400), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin diabolicus of or relating to the Devil, devilish (Vulgate) < Hellenistic Greek διαβολικός slanderous, in Byzantine Greek also devilish < Hellenistic Greek διάβολος devil (see devil n.) + -ικός -ic suffix.Compare Catalan diabòlic (1460), Spanish diabólico (first half of the 14th cent.), Portuguese diabólico (14th cent.), Italian diabolico (late 13th cent.), and also German diabolisch (early 16th cent.).
