Etymology: < Old French areter, aretter, < à to + reter (Provençal reptar and Old Spanish reptar ) < Latin reputāre to count, reckon: see repute v. After 1400 latinized (in England) as arrectāre, as if connected with rectum, whence the common 15–16th cent. spelling arect, arrect.
Obsolete.
