Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French -stat; Latin -stata, Greek -στάτης.
Etymology: < (i) French -stat (in e.g. héliostat heliostat n., aérostat aerostat n.); and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin -stata (in e.g. heliostata heliostat n.); and that word's etymon (iii) ancient Greek -στάτης (in e.g. ὀρθοστάτης orthostat n., Byzantine Greek ὑδροστάτης hydrostatic balance: see hydrostat n.) < στα- , root of ἱστάναι to cause to stand, set (see stand v.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns.Earliest in the late 18th cent. in the borrowings heliostat n. and aerostat n. Formations within English are found from the first half of the 19th cent. Chiefly combining with elements ultimately of Greek origin, although compare siderostat n., with a first element of Latin origin.
