Etymology: modern Latin, < Greek διπλόος double + κόκκος grain, seed, adopted as a genus name by A. Weichselbaum 1886, in Wiener Med. Jahrb. LXXXII. 483.
Bacteriology.
Any coccus that occurs predominantly in pairs, esp. one belonging to the genus of parasitic bacteria so called, which includes the pneumococcus, D. pneumoniæ.
