Etymology: modern < Greek διάδοχος (see Diadochian adj.) + -ite suffix¹. Named by Breithaupt in 1837, from his belief that phosphorus had succeeded arsenic in its composition.

Hydrous phosphate and sulphate of iron, of brown or yellowish colour and resinous appearance.
