Etymology: < the name of Rudolf Diesel (1858–1913), German engineer.
Used attributively to designate a type of internal-combustion engine invented by Diesel, in which air alone is drawn into the cylinder, this air being so highly compressed that the heat generated ignites the fuel-oil when it enters the combustion space. Also elliptical, a diesel engine; a locomotive, motor diesel etc., driven by a diesel engine (also attributive).
