Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek διάλογος , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek διάλογος dialogue n. + -ist suffix. Compare post-classical Latin dialogista person who takes part in a dialogue, conversationalist (perhaps 5th cent.), and also French dialogiste (17th cent.), Spanish dialogista (c1609), Italian dialogista (a1588), all in sense 1. Compare later dialoguist n.A Greek form *διαλογιστής is apparently not attested.
1. A writer of dialogue, esp. one who writes a literary dialogue (dialogue n. 1a).
