A solution which is or has been subjected to dialysis (used in two distinct senses): (a) the portion of a mixture that remains behind after dialysis (opposed to diffusate); (b) (now more usually) the portion of a mixture that passes through the membrane during dialysis (opposed to retentate). Also: the solvent or solution with which dialysis is carried out.
