Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin diffluus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin diffluus (apparently) exuding liquid freely ( < diffluere : see diffluent adj.) + -ous suffix.It appears that the interpretation of classical Latin diffluus may have changed over time. The word occurs in an isolated attestation in a fragment of the poet Matius preserved in Macrobius Satires (5th cent.), where it designates juicy figs.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
