Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin diffodere.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin diffodere to dig out (12th cent. in British sources), to dig in various ways (13th cent.) < classical Latin dif- dif- prefix + fodere to dig (see fodient adj.).Post-classical Latin diffodere ‘to dig out’ may represent a variant or alteration (after dif- ) of classical Latin dēfodere ‘to excavate’ < dē- de- prefix + fodere.
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To dig out, to excavate.
