Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Greek. Partly also a borrowing from Latin. Partly also a borrowing from French. Etymons: Greek -σία; Greek -σις; Latin -sia; Latin -sis; French -sie.
Etymology: Partly (i) < ancient Greek -σία (in e.g. νομοθεσία nomothesy n.; < -τος or -της , suffixes forming agent nouns + -ία -ia suffix1, with assibilation of -τ- to -σ- before -ι- ), partly via classical Latin or post-classical Latin -sia; and partly (ii) < ancient Greek -σις -sis suffix, partly via classical Latin or post-classical Latin -sis; in both cases also partly via French -sie.For borrowings of words ultimately reflecting the Greek type in -σία , compare e.g. fantasy n., dyscrasy n., epilepsy n., dyspepsy n., apostasy n., idiosyncrasy n., metonomasy n. For borrowings of words ultimately reflecting the Greek type in -σις , compare e.g. heresy n., hypocrisy n., poesy n., metamorphosy n., deuterosy n., onomatopoesy n., autaesthesy n., tetrasyncrasy n. at tetra- comb. form 1. Found very rarely in analogous formations, e.g. practisy n.
Used in forming nouns denoting practices or conditions, as oneirocrisy n., paralysie n., etc.

Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels will be reduced accordingly.
Hypocoristic diminutive suffix added to (i) proper names, as Betsy, Patsy, Topsy, also in the form -cy, as Nancy, (ii) common nouns, as babsy, ducksy, mopsy n., petsy, popsy n. (popsy-wopsy). In adjectival formations expressing a degree of mocking contempt, as artsy-and-craftsy, artsy-fartsy, backwoodsy, bitsy, booksy, folksy, itsy-bitsy, teensy, etc., the suffix may be considered to represent a nursery form (cf. -y suffix6), or the plural (or even a singular ending) in -s + -y suffix1.
