单词 dingleberry
释义

dingleberryn.

Brit. /ˈdɪŋɡlbɛri/, /ˈdɪŋɡlb(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈdɪŋɡ(ə)lˌbɛri/
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: dangle-berry n. at dangle v. Compounds.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps a variant or alteration of dangle-berry n. at dangle v. Compounds, now distinguished in form in sense 1 below. The plant. Dangleberry was apparently originally used to denote several of plants of the family Ericaceae, especially Gaylussacia frondosa and Vaccinium stamineum (with the latter compare deerberry n.). Compare the following discussions (the first in the context of standardizing plant names), in which dingleberry is implied to have had a similar range of applications:1924 National Nurseryman Jan. 14/1 When a customer orders a Dingleberry we shall know that a Vaccinium erythrocarpun [sic] is wanted not a Dangleberry which is Gaylusacia [sic] frondosa.1925 Plant Dis. Reporter (U.S. Dept. Agric.) Suppl. 39 89 Tarspot, Rhytisma vaccinii Fr. Generally abundant wherever found on dingleberry (Vaccinium stamineum) in Pennsylvania. Perhaps compare earlier dingle n. (with reference to the plant's habitat), although this word is typically used in parts of North America where the plant is not native. Other senses. In sense 2a perhaps associated with ding-a-ling n. 2, ding-dong n. 5, etc. In sense 2b probably as a humorous alteration of English slang dillberry , in the same sense (1811 or earlier; found in both British and U.S. use), perhaps after dingle-dangle v. In sense 2c probably also associated with dingle-dangle v. Use in names. Dingleberry is also attested as a surname in the 19th cent., apparently chiefly in North America.
1. U.S. The southern mountain cranberry, Vaccinium erythrocarpum, a perennial deciduous shrub with red fruits which is native to the southeastern United States. Now rare.
