Etymology: < dinner n. + jacket n. Compare slightly later dinner coat n.
A man's jacket without tails for wearing on formal occasions in the evening, typically black and worn with a white shirt and black bow tie (cf. black tie n.). Originally as a somewhat less formal alternative to a swallow-tailed dress coat.
