Etymology: < French diane (16th cent. in Littré), Spanish diana, a beating of the drum at day-break, Italian diana ‘a kind of march sounded by trumpetters in a morning to their generall and captaine’ (Florio 1598), < dia day. Compare Latin quoti-diānus, etc.
Obsolete.
A trumpet call or drumroll at early morn. Also attributive, as dian-sounding.
