Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French altesse.
Etymology: < Middle French altesse, title or form of address for a high-ranking person (1500 as altese ; French altesse ), probably < Italian altezza or perhaps < Spanish alteza (for both see altezza n.), with remodelling of the suffix after French -esse -ess suffix2. Compare later altezza n.With the form altess compare -ess suffix2.
1. Chiefly in French or continental European contexts: a person of high rank, a nobleman or noblewoman. Frequently as a title, usually with possessive and capital initial: ‘Highness’. Sometimes ironic or humorous. Cf. altezza n. Now historical.
