Etymology: Partly < Italian altezza highness (mid 13th cent.), used as title or form of address for high nobility (16th cent.), and partly < Spanish alteza, †altesa fact of being high, highness (11th cent.), used as title or form of address for high nobility (mid 13th cent.), both < post-classical Latin altitia height (4th cent.) < classical Latin altus high (see altus n.) + -itia -ice suffix1. Compare Middle French haultesse (see hautesse n.), Old Occitan auteza (13th cent.), Catalan altesa (13th cent.), Portuguese alteza (13th cent.). Compare earlier altesse n. Compare also earlier hautesse n.In form altessa probably influenced partly by Middle French, French altesse altesse n. and partly (especially when used with reference to women) by Italian -essa -ess suffix1 (compare e.g. contessa n.).

Chiefly in Italian or Spanish contexts: a person of high rank; a nobleman or (esp. in later use) a noblewoman. Frequently as a title, usually with possessive and capital initial: ‘Highness’. Cf. altesse n.
