Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin discussivus ; discuss v., -ive suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) < post-classical Latin discussivus that serves to rebut (13th cent. in a British source), that distinguishes (a1540) < classical Latin discuss- , past participial stem of discutere discuss v. + -īvus -ive suffix, and partly (ii) < discuss v. + -ive suffix.With sense A. 1 compare Middle French, French discussif (1549 in this sense); compare also discutient adj. and slightly earlier discussing adj. In sense A. 4 perhaps influenced by association with discursive adj. 1. With use as noun in medicine (sense B.) compare discutient n.
