Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: dis- prefix, assimilation n.
Etymology: < dis- prefix + assimilation n., after French désassimilation (1799 in the passage translated in quot. 1809).
Physiology and Biochemistry. Now rare.
The breaking down of complex chemical compounds to simpler ones by an organism's metabolic processes (= catabolism n.); an instance of this.
