-tresssuffix

Primary stress in British English is either attracted to this suffix or retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element. Primary stress in US English is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element. See e.g. auditress n.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English -ter , -tor , -ess suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < -ter (in nouns, chiefly agent nouns, such as hunter n., seamster n., songster n., etc.) + -ess suffix1, and partly < -tor (in nouns, chiefly agent nouns, such as actor n., auditor n., traitor n., etc.) + -ess suffix1, in both cases with elision of the unstressed vowel in the ending of the masculine parent noun. Compare -trice suffix, -trix suffix.
ending of feminines of agent-nouns in -ter, -tor, etc., usually short for -ter-ess, -tor-ess: as in actress, auditress, huntress, mistress, seamstress, songstress, traitress, vintress: see -ess suffix1.
