Etymology: < classical Latin -cephalī (in e.g. Macrocephalī (see macrocephalus n.), Cynocephalī (see cynocephalus n.)), nominative plural of -cephalus (see -cephalous comb. form). Compare -cephaly comb. form, -cephalism comb. form, -cephalous comb. form, -cephalic comb. form.Found in a small number of formations in the second half of the 19th cent. The modern anthropological use is after corresponding use of post-classical Latin -cephali , apparently originating with A. A. Retzius Om formen af Nordboernes Cranier (1843), who used Brachycephali and Dolichocephali . Compare earlier acephali n.
