Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian disciplinante; Spanish disciplinante; French disciplinant.
Etymology: Partly < (i) Italian disciplinante (a1476), use as noun of present participle of disciplinare discipline v., partly < (ii) Spanish disciplinante (1538), use as noun of present participle of disciplinar discipline v., and partly (in later use) < (iii) French disciplinant, noun (1615 (in a translation from Italian) or earlier), use as noun of present participle of discipliner discipline v. Compare Portuguese disciplinante (1562).
Now rare (chiefly historical).
A person who scourges himself or herself as a form of religious discipline or penance. Cf. discipline n. 1.Chiefly with reference to Christian religious orders in Spain, Italy, and France.
