Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin ambrosia; French ambrosie.
Etymology: Originally (in Old English) < classical Latin ambrosia (see below). In later use < Anglo-Norman ambrosye, Anglo-Norman and Middle French ambrosie and its etymon classical Latin ambrosia (for both, see ambrosia n.); compare -y suffix3. Compare later ambrose n., ambrosia n.In quot. OE translating use of classical Latin ambrosius divine, divinely sweet (see ambrosial adj.) or alternatively the genitive of classical Latin ambrosia ambrosia n. (attested as a variant reading), in either case with reference to the supernatural quality or origin of a sweet scent.
Obsolete.
Ambrosia (in various mythological and related senses). In early use also: a medicinal plant, perhaps wood sage (cf. ambrose n. 1).In quot. OE identified as the name of a plant by the translator, although the source refers to the supernatural sweetness of a scent (see etymological note).
