Etymology: < (i) German -troph, suffix forming adjectives (formations in which are found from at least the late 19th cent.), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek -τροϕος, combining form (in e.g. ὀλιγότροϕος : see oligotrophic adj.) of τροϕός nurse (see trophus n.). New formations within English are found from the first half of the 20th cent., e.g. oligotroph n., prototroph n. Ancient Greek -τροϕος forms adjectives in both the active sense ‘that nourishes’ (e.g. δονακοτρόϕος producing reeds, ἱππότροϕος rearing horses), and the passive sense ‘nourished, reared’ (e.g. νεότροϕος newly reared, ὀρεσίτροϕος mountain-bred).
