Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin discolor; Latin discolōrus.
Etymology: Either (i) < classical Latin discolor differing in colour, of different colours, variegated in colour ( < dis- dis- prefix + color colour n.1), or (ii) < classical Latin discolōrus differing in colour, of different colours (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius) < dis- dis- prefix + color colour n.1 + -us , suffix forming adjectives. Compare French discolore (1546 in Middle French; end of the 18th cent. in botanical use). Compare earlier discolorate adj. 2, discoloured adj. 2, discolorous adj., and also earlier concolour adj.
Chiefly Botany.
