Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ambulāt-, ambulāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ambulāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of ambulāre to walk < amb- round, about (see ambi- prefix) + a second element also seen in exul exul n. Compare earlier ambulation n., perambulate v., and also amble v.Compare Middle French, French ambuler (15th cent.), Spanish ambular (early 17th cent.), Italian ambulare (1348), all rare and literary. With the past participle ambulate compare -ate suffix2.
Chiefly literary. Now somewhat archaic.
intransitive. To move about or from place to place; to walk. Frequently with adverb or prepositional phrase as complement.
