Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a Spanish lexical item, and partly modelled on a Portuguese lexical item. Etymons: dis- prefix, confide v.
Etymology: < dis- prefix + confide v., originally after Spanish desconfiar (15th cent.), in later use (in quot. 1884) after Portuguese desconfiar (14th cent.). Compare Catalan desconfiar (14th cent.). Compare earlier disconfidence n., disconfident adj.
Obsolete.
intransitive. To have no confidence or trust (in); to doubt; to feel distrust.
