Etymology: In quot. ?a1450 < Middle French amelioracion improvement (1421; 1510 in plural ameliorations in specific sense ‘repairs (of a building)’; French amélioration , rare before the 17th cent.) < ameillorer (see ameliorate v.) + -ation -ation suffix, with alteration after classical Latin meliōr- , melior better (see meliorate v.); compare later améliorer ameliorate v. In later use probably re-formed < ameliorate v. + -ion suffix1 (compare -ation suffix). Compare earlier melioration n.
