Etymology: < the name of Don Quixote, the hero of a Spanish romance by M. de Cervantes, who attempts to be a knight-errant as described in the books of chivalry.
A person who attempts to do an absurdly impossible thing or to carry out an impossible ideal. Also attributive. See also quixotic adj. and n., etc.
