(compare the β. forms at that entry, and also later mesnage v.), or perhaps (ii) < Middle French amenager, amenagier to receive (a person) into a house, to lodge (a person) (end of the 12th cent. in Old French as amanagier; French aménager ), apparently < a- a- prefix⁵ + menager , mesnager , mesnagier mesnage v. (although this is first attested later); in this case, the sense ‘to control’, which is not paralleled in French, would appear to show a specific sense development in English.
