单词 ample
释义

ampleadj.adv.

Brit. /ˈampl/, U.S. /ˈæmp(ə)l/
Forms: late Middle English empler (comparative), late Middle English– ample, 1500s ampell; also Scottish pre-1700 ampill.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French ample; Latin amplus.
Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman and Middle French ample, Middle French emple (French ample) of large extent, area, capacity, or space (11th cent. in Old French), (of an immaterial thing) large in extent or amount (c1120), (of writing or speech) dealing with matters in great detail (beginning of the 15th cent. or earlier), abundant, plentiful, full, complete (early 15th cent. or earlier), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin amplus large, big, spacious, abundant, (of orators or their speech) impressive by reason of copiousness; of unknown origin.Compare Old Occitan ample (13th cent.), Catalan ample (13th cent.), Spanish amplo (c1200), Portuguese amplo (1656; 12th cent. as †anpro ), Italian ampio (second half of the 13th cent.). With the use as adverb compare earlier amply adv., and also similar adverbial uses of Anglo-Norman and Middle French ample (1160 in Anglo-Norman, subsequently in late 14th cent. in continental French), Italian ampio (a1321).
A. adj.
