Forms: Also 1500s disyn, dysyn, 1600s disen, 1800s dizzen.
Etymology: Found only from 1530: but evidently the verb belonging to dis- , dise- , in distaff n., and Low German diesse the bunch of flax on a distaff. It is remarkable that neither the verb, nor the noun as a separate word, has been found in Old English or Middle English, and that on the other hand no verb corresponding to dizen is known in Low German or Dutch.
1. transitive. To dress or attire (a distaff) with flax, etc. for spinning. Obsolete.
