dissociative identity disorder n. Psychiatry a psychiatric disorder characterized by the existence in one person of two or more distinct personalities which temporarily have power over the person's behaviour at different times, and between which the person typically switches suddenly; also called multiple personality disorder.Dissociative identity disorder frequently occurs in the context of sustained childhood trauma and is often understood as a coping mechanism for dealing with such experiences. People living with the disorder may exhibit symptoms of profound disassociation between their various personalities, such as conflicting memories or amnesia, and a sense of not inhabiting their own body.
