单词 | -ulous |
释义 | -uloussuffix a compound adjectival suffix representing the two Latin endings -ulōsus and -ulus. In the former case there are frequently variants in -ulose, which in modern use are as a rule more specific in meaning. To this class belong angulous, calculous, fabulous, fistulous, etc. (see -ulose suffix1); also crapulous, meticulous, populous, scrupulous, etc. The number of purely modern formations is not large. To the group which corresponds to Latin forms in -ulus belong bibulous, credulous, emulous, garrulous, pendulous, sedulous, stridulous, tremulous. In a very few instances both forms occur in Latin, as querulus, rarely querulōsus, querulous; rīdiculus, rarely rīdiculōsus, ridiculous.
