Primary stress is attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this suffix and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. propagulum n.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin -ulum.
Etymology: < classical Latin -ulum, neuter singular of -ulus -ulus suffix. Compare -culum suffix, -ula suffix.The ending is common in words borrowed from Latin, but occurs very rarely in new formations within English (e.g. rostrulum n.). An etymologically distinct classical Latin suffix -ulum (in e.g. speculum speculum n.), forming nouns denoting instruments and objects, is shown by borrowings such as speculum n., vinculum n., etc.
1. Diminutive suffix forming nouns, as rostrulum n.
2. (Not productive in English.) Occurring in nouns (borrowed from classical or post-classical Latin) denoting continuous action, as pendulum n.
