Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + violet n.1; in β. forms < dog n.1 + violet n.1; after post-classical Latin viola canina (see quot. 1597; compare scientific Latin Viola canina ( Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) 935)).
Any of several scentless wild violets (genus Viola), now esp. the European species Viola riviniana, with purple or lilac flowers and heart-shaped leaves, found chiefly in woods and grassland. Also figurative.
