Etymology: < Hindi āl Indian mulberry tree, of unknown origin. Compare earlier noni n. and Morinda n.
The noni or Indian mulberry, Morinda citrifolia. Also: the reddish dye obtained from this plant, used (esp. formerly) in India to colour cotton fabrics. Cf. Morinda n.

1853 T. C. Archer Pop. Econ. Bot. ix. 213 Morinda citrifolia, a small tree, native of Central India, where its roots constitute the red dye called al or aal.
1875 R. Hunt & F. W. Rudler Ure's Dict. Arts (ed. 7) I. 1 Has obtained from the aal root a pale yellow substance which he calls morindin.
1881 L. Liotard Dyes Indian Growth & Production iv. 69 The colour produced by al is a dull-red, not so brilliant, but far more serviceable than the safflower dye.
1917 Chem. Engineer 26 21/2 Bancudo is the well-known al dye of India.
1995 L. Lynton Sari 91 In some areas..natural dyes are still used, coming primarily from the roots of the aal (Morinda citrifolia) tree which produces a range of reds from a bright pink through to deep brown.
