Etymology: < scientific Latin Allodape, genus name ( P. A. Latreille et al. Encycl. méthodique (Histoire naturelle) (1825) x. 19/1) < ancient Greek ἀλλοδαπός foreign (ultimately < ἄλλος other (see allo- comb. form): see note) + -ine suffix1.Ancient Greek ἀλλοδαπός may derive from ἀλλοδ- , a neuter form related to classical Latin aliud (see per aliud adv.) + a second element related to the second element of classical Latin longinquus longinque adj.

A bee belonging to the genus Allodape or the subfamily Allodapinae, comprising primitively social bees which rear the broods of several females communally in unsealed burrows and some of which are parasitic in other bee colonies.
