Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek ἀλλοιόστροϕα, ἀλλοιόστροϕος.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀλλοιόστροϕα, neuter plural of ἀλλοιόστροϕος consisting of irregular strophes < ancient Greek ἀλλοῖος of another sort or kind, different (see alleotic n.) + στροϕή strophe n.The form allæostropha used by Milton was retained in later editions throughout the 17th cent.; the form preferred by some modern commentators on Milton, allœostropha or alloeostropha, seems to have been introduced by closer analogy with the Greek etymon, the earliest edition to do so being apparently that which appeared in Charles Whittingham's British Poets series of 1822.
Obsolete. rare.
With plural agreement. Passages of verse consisting of irregular strophes.Used by Milton with reference to the metre used in his poem Samson Agonistes.Sometimes interpreted as an adj.
