Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English to do good , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < to do good (see do v. 4a(b)) + -ism suffix. Compare slightly earlier do-gooding n. and later do-goodery n.
With disparaging implication: the action or fact of doing good, or trying to do good, esp. in a misguided way; misguided philanthropy. Cf. do-goodery n.
