The highest degree awarded by a university faculty, graduate school, or other approved academic institution; (now usually) a postgraduate degree above the level of a master's degree. Cf. doctor n. 4a.Originally the degree specifically conferred authority to teach the subject or subjects in question, but it has subsequently become understood as representing recognition of a high level of proficiency, whether in relation to teaching or not.A doctorate may be awarded either to a student who has successfully defended a doctoral dissertation, or as an honorary degree to any individual deemed worthy of special recognition for scholarly work or other contributions to society.In quot. 1641 in figurative context.
