Etymology: < doctor n. + -ess suffix1. Compare earlier doctress n., doctrice n., doctrix n.In sense 1 originally after German (Frau) Doktorin, form of address for a doctor's wife. Compare French doctoresse female medical doctor, woman with a doctorate (18th cent., now somewhat rare; 15th cent. in Middle French denoting a learned woman).
1. Chiefly humorous. A doctor's wife. Cf. doctress n. 3 Obsolete.
