Etymology: < German Allophit (M. Websky 1873, in Zeitschr. der Deutsch. Geol. Ges. 399) < German allo- allo- comb. form + Ophit ophite n.¹ (1692 or earlier, in early use with Latin inflectional endings; < classical Latin ophītēs ophites n.); so called from its resemblance to ophite (serpentine).

Mineralogy. Now disused.

A mineral of uncertain identity, consisting of hydrated magnesium aluminosilicate and resembling serpentine.
