Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare doggy n.The forms dobe, dobie are also recorded in the same meaning (and also, apparently in extended use, denoting a small child) in U.S. regional use: see Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. at dobe sense 6 and compare (earlier):1880 V. M. Rose Texas Vendetta i. 5 As many calves and colts escape the closest scrutiny, they are, when weaned, called ‘dobies’ and ‘mavericks’, and afford an exciting emulation to the enterprising youth, who holds with undisputed title all that he may succeed in branding.
U.S. regional (western).
Originally: an unacclimatized young heifer or steer on a range. Subsequently: a neglected or undernourished calf, esp. one without a mother.
