Etymology: < dog n.1 + man n.1Earlier currency is probably implied by the following use as part of a mock title, although if so it is unclear in which, if any, of the senses below (it may perhaps imply a different sense, ‘dog catcher’ or ‘dog killer’):1604 T. Middleton Blacke Bk. sig. E 4 I giue and bequeath to thee Dicke Dogge-man, Graund-Catchpole, (ouer and aboue thy bare-bone Fees, that will scarse hang wicked flesh on thy backe) all such Lurches, Gripes and Squeezes, as may bee wrung out by the fist of extortion.
