Etymology: < Middle French, French dogmatisme (1595 in Montaigne (see quot. 1603 at sense 1a); compare also the gloss given in Cotgrave (1611): ‘the teaching, or preaching of new doctrine, the producing of a new sect’) < post-classical Latin dogmatismus teaching of the Christian faith (6th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek δογματισμός dogmatic principle < ancient Greek δογματ- , δόγμα dogma n. + -ισμός -ism suffix. Compare Spanish dogmatizar (16th cent.).Not recorded in the majority of dictionaries before the late 18th cent.
