Etymology: In α. forms < dog n.¹ + tongue n.; in β. forms < the genitive of dog n.¹ + tongue n. In sense 1 after classical Latin cynoglossos (Pliny), itself < Hellenistic Greek κυνόγλωσσος , κυνόγλωσσον (Dioscorides); so called on account of the shape of its leaves. In sense 2 after ancient Greek κυνόγλωσσος; probably so called on account of its shape.
