Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item, and partly modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: dog n.1, tongue n.
Etymology: In α. forms < dog n.1 + tongue n.; in β. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + tongue n. In sense 1 after classical Latin cynoglossos (Pliny), itself < Hellenistic Greek κυνόγλωσσος , κυνόγλωσσον (Dioscorides); so called on account of the shape of its leaves. In sense 2 after ancient Greek κυνόγλωσσος; probably so called on account of its shape.
1. Any of various plants constituting the genus Cynoglossum (family Boraginaceae), esp. a European weed, C. officinale, with dark red flowers, which was formerly used medicinally. Also called hound's-tongue.
