单词 dogsbody
释义

dogsbodyn.

Brit. /ˈdɒɡzbɒdi/, U.S. /ˈdɔɡzˌbɑdi/, /ˈdɑɡzˌbɑdi/
Forms: 1800s– dogsbody, 1800s– dog's body.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: dog n.1, body n.
Etymology: < the genitive of dog n.1 + body n. The metaphor is unclear in sense 1: perhaps with reference to the shape of the pudding when in the cloth; or perhaps with allusion to a dog' s meal as jumbled or messy (compare dog's dinner n. at dog n.1 Compounds 3d), although this would not explain the second element. The naval context of sense 2a suggests that it is a development from sense 1, perhaps reflecting partial reanalysis as showing body n. III., and probably also the negative connotations of dog n.1 5a. Sense 2b probably developed from 2a (the use by T. E. Lawrence in quot. 1922 supports the assumption of an origin in military slang).
1. Nautical slang. Peas boiled in a cloth; = pease pudding n. Also: sea biscuits softened in water, with sugar added. Now historical.
